Catalan belongs to the Romance language group. Today, it’s mainly spoken by people in some areas of Catalonia and Valencia in Spain and in the Balearic Islands. It’s the official regional language in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and some areas of Aragon and Andorra. Linguistically, Catalan is most similar to Occitan.
The language is spoken by approximately 13 million people. Most of them live in Spain and on the Balearic Islands. Linguists divide the language regions into Eastern and Western Catalan. Eastern Catalan is spoken in the eastern part of Catalonia, a part of France, the Balearic Islands, and L'Alguer (Alghero). The main distinctions between the two dialects are the vowel accents.
