By deciphering Mycenaean writing (the Linear B found on clay tablets in settlements from the Mycenaean era), it was proved that the Greek language has been around since the 15th century before Christ. The development of Greek pronunciation didn’t take place concurrently with written Greek, however. The pronunciation of many letters and letter combinations evolved over time, while spelling was never adjusted to those changes. This resulted in complicated spelling in the language.
For example, Greek has five ways to spell the “ie” sound. Nevertheless, don’t expect a simplification of the spelling anytime soon. Many consider these spelling idiosyncrasies to symbolize the awe-inspiring age of the Greek language.
