The Hebrew language belongs to the Canaanite language group and is classified as a Northwest Semitic language in the Afro-Asiatic language family. Dating back to the first millennium before Christ, the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible is considered to be the oldest source of Hebrew.
After the Babylonian exile of the Jews, Aramaic was the popular language of the Jewish population, so Hebrew became mixed with Aramaic. Beginning around 200 A.D., Hebrew was no longer used for everyday speech. However, it was still used as an important religious language and also to write philosophical, medical, and legal texts.

Hebrew is written from right to left with its own Hebraic alphabet. In Hebrew grammar, inflection plays an important role in deriving verbs, constructing the genitive, and forming nouns.
Instant quoteThe Hebrew script is based on a consonantal alphabet. Each root word consists only of consonants. Vowels are included when forming derivations, and prefixes and suffixes are added. There are two genders; the neutral gender doesn’t exist. As in German and English, verbs can have three tenses: Past, present, and future.
