The Russian language stems from the common Old East Slavic language, which was spoken by the Kievan Rus and its successors. The Ruthenian language arose in the Middle Ages and played a significant role in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In contrast to Ruthenian, however, Russian was largely influenced by the Church Slavic liturgical language.
In the 18th century, the Russian language underwent reform implemented by the writers Michail Lomonossow, Antioch Kantemir, and Wassil Trediakowski. After the fall of the Third Reich and the end of World War II, Russian came to be known as a new European language and experienced a boom in popularity. Russian was also frequently taught in schools as a second language.
