Expanding your business abroad is a big step to take. There are a number of things you have to take into account: laws and regulations, transport, communication and, of course, getting to know your new market. The fact that British businesses are successful abroad is nothing new. Croatia offers numerous prospects for British investors across a wide range of sectors. If your company has also set its sights on Croatia then we will be happy to give you a few tips to help you succeed in doing business in this country.
Croats are formal towards their business partners in business meetings. Being too familiar is not recommended. Always address business contacts with their title and surname.
Companies are structured in a very hierarchical way and the authority for decision-making lies with the director. Managers are appointed to manage employees.
If you make an appointment by phone, you are expected to confirm it by email. In your first meeting, it is important that you first take some time to introduce yourself, to listen well, and to ask questions of your business contact. It is often the case that decisions are made in a later follow-up meeting.
In Croatia, work and private life often intermingle. Lunch is often seen as a good opportunity to do business. Corporate gifts are often exchanged at such times. Offering gifts is a normal occurrence and is more than a mere a formality. Flowers, chocolates, and alcohol are often appreciated.
Instant quotationThe official language of Croatia is Croatian. In Istria County, Italian is also recognised as an official language. A large proportion of the population also speaks Serbian.
However, in business circles the lingua francas are, on the whole, English and German. Usually it is sufficient to have a business card in English. Despite this, if you have some of your business documents in Croatian, this is always appreciated.
We will be glad to be of service to you for your translations to and from Croatian. We not only offer translations for business documents and day-to-day correspondence, but also presentations, brochures, and proposals.
