Language can sometimes be an obstacle if you want to do business in other countries. If language isn’t used correctly, communications can be awkward and misunderstandings can arise. That’s why it’s important to prepare well before you venture overseas. If you want to do business in Kazakhstan, for example, you will not only be confronted by cultural differences but by a difficult language. There are two important languages in the country, Russian and Kazakh. Russian is spoken by more than 80% of the population and Kazakh by more than 50%. The use of Kazakh is increasing, however, and is being used more often in an official capacity.
Kazakh is a Turkic language. This means that the language is a member of the Turkish family of languages, spoken by different peoples all over the world. The Turkic languages in turn stem from the Altaic family of languages which includes Mongolian, Korean, and Japanese. Kazakh is spoken by about eleven million people, not just by the inhabitants of Kazakhstan but by minority groups in Afghanistan, China, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Strangely enough, only 56% of the population of Kazakhstan speak the language, and it is the official language in the country! More than six million people regard the language as their mother tongue. The language is written in three different alphabets, depending on the country: the Cyrillic alphabet, the Latin alphabet, and an adapted Arabic alphabet. In Kazakhstan, the Cyrillic alphabet is used. The alphabet is similar to the Russian alphabet but with nine extra letters.
Kazakh is a difficult language for Europeans because it is very different from Indo-European languages and translations are often necessary. Our team works with the best professional translators who have years of experience and who are native-speakers of the target language. Every translator is also a specialist in a specific field of expertise: technical, legal or marketing; we offer a whole range of translations. Feel free to get in touch with one of our project managers for more information.
